Calvary Baptist Church opened its doors on July 16, 1989, when Pastor John Hornbeck heeded to God’s call to enter the mission field and minister to the U.S. military.
While on staff at Independent Baptist Church in Clinton, Md., Pastor Hornbeck had the privilege of discipling many service men and women from Andrews Air Force Base, Bowling Air Force Base, and a few Army and Navy bases in the D.C. area. After receiving God’s call, he inquired of Dr. James Kennard, Baptist International Missions, Inc. military director, about what bases needed a church. The list included several bases in Japan, Germany and Italy. Aviano was near the top of the list.
As Pastor Hornbeck prayed, God spoke to his heart about Aviano. In February 1987 he took his wife, LeeEtta, and son, John III, on a survey trip to Aviano. During the trip, the Hornbeck’s realized the need for increased support due to living expenses in Italy. They spent nearly three years working to gain the needed support. When adequate support was not raised, the Hornbeck’s trusted God to provide and entered the mission field. God honored their faith.
When the Hornbeck’s arrived in Aviano in March 1989, Pastor Hornbeck had a vision for the church: 1) Reach the military for Jesus Christ; 2) Disciple the saved; and 3) Pray for God’s call in their lives. He learned early on that when God calls, God will also supply, as long as you keep your eyes on Him.
The church held its first service in the Hornbeck’s home at 2 Via San Michele, San Cassiano di Brugnera, on Sunday, July 16, 1989. Fifteen came for the a.m. service. Four attended the p.m. service, where Pastor Hornbeck preached from John 3:1-7. A young man, Jay Haughton, accepted Christ as his Saviour.
In the weeks to follow, Pastor Hornbeck used his car to bus military children to and from services. For a great while, children were the only attendees on Sunday and Wednesday evenings.
A special service was held in January 1990, and hosted guest speaker, Pastor Eddie Woodfield of Vicenza Baptist Church in Vicenza, Italy. That night ten families attended. Each had a baby in the nursery, which was too small to house them all. The Hornbeck’s realized the need to move to a bigger location, and in October 1990, the church moved to Via Trieste in Marsure, Italy. When the Hornbeck’s left the church in November 1994 it was averaging roughly 60 people.
Pastors Pat Creed, Gary Tingen, and Mike Hearell pastored the church, respectively, after the Hornbeck’s departure until February 4, 2001, when Pastor Matthew Olsen became pastor.
In the spring of 1996, the Olsen’s received word that CBC was in need of a pastor. At the time, Pastor Olsen was in seminary, preparing for the ministry; and God used this knowledge as a spark in his heart. The spark ignited a fire that instilled a desire to serve God among the military families in the Aviano community. Pastor Olsen himself was a military kid and spent several years overseas.
Throughout their ministry Pastor Olsen focused his attention on teaching and training others to serve in and through the church by lending opportunities for others to teach, preach, plan, and execute various programs and activities. During the family’s 10 years at CBC they saw the church reach 113 attendees. The average regular attendance was 65. As an added bonus, four men surrendered for full-time Christian service and are still working toward that goal today. The family departed CBC in May 2011.
Pastors Roy Smith, Steve Nutt, and D.O. Van Dyne pastored the church, respectively, until July 2012 when Pastor Daniel Norton began pastoring. After moving the church from Roveredo to Vigonovo, to Aviano, the Norton’s moved the church to its current location on Via Chiesa in Marsure.
In August 2012, God spoke to Pastor Chris War about moving himself and his wife, LouAnne, to Italy, to reach service members and their families with the Gospel, as well as the surrounding Italian community for Christ.
On May 5, 2013, Pastor War turned over Freedom Independent Baptist Church to Pastor Bill Anker, and started deputation to raise the needed support to go to Italy. The same month he flew to Aviano to candidate here and received a 100% call to pastor. In January 2014, the War’s finished deputation and arrived in Italy.
